Shortly
before WW I, Victoria experienced a major building boom which led to the creation
of "street car suburbs" at some distance from the city centre. It
was necessary to build additional outside halls like this one constructed
at Fernwood in 1911. It was important to have these halls fairly close to
each other due to the fact that horse drawn apparatus was slow and short ranged.
With the transition to motorized rigs, the need for many of these halls disappeared
leading to the closure of several.
